The Iraqi Interior Ministry today announced the arrest of a Daesh leader who headed the Zakat Bureau in the northern city of Nineveh.
“The second rapid reaction forces of the Nineveh Police Command, based on accurate information, arrested a terrorist who was the so-called Zakat Bureau official in the Sharqat area [south of Nineveh],” Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Saad Maan said in a statement.
Colonel Ahmad Al-Jubouri, from the Nineveh Operations Command, said the operation included a search and raid by Iraqi forces on the western side of the city of Mosul targeting elements which were hiding among civilians and displaced people.
He told the Anadolu Agency that the campaign aims to restore security and stability and return displaced persons to their homes.
Iraqi forces have already arrested thousands of suspected Daesh fighters after they recaptured Mosul from the terrorist group last year.
But the organisation still maintains sleeper cells across the country which have been active in carrying out guerrilla attacks.
